This place is sick! Makes the place in Sardinia look like a total shit hole. Wind up a hill through a private gate and you are home for the Daring crew for 2 weeks…me, just a long week….wish I was staying longer.

View from the Villa in St. Tropez and celebrating Benj’s b-day
Published September 30, 2008 Travel Leave a CommentThis was a special moment in time for me. For all of you who know me and my obsession with cow horns and the like this was a sign. Standing on it and looking at the water was dreamy. I’ll never have this body again and I’m glad it was captured. I didn’t know Josh was taking this and to his genius behind the camera, he did it in black and white…doesn’t show every line and mark. For the s/y Daring crew staying at the Villa in St. Tropez…you know where this special beach is.
Leaving the airport in Nice traveling to St. Tropez it was fitting that Josh and I stopped in the town of Mougins for lunch. Having recently read a Picasso biography, and being reminded by my francophile husband, Josh, I was intrigued by the town that Pablo Picasso decided to make his home. As early as 1935 Picasso discovered Mougins in the company of the photographer Man Ray. In 1961 until his death in 1973, Picasso and his wife Jacqueline made Mougins their home. On a more contemporary level, Mougins has more recently been host to The Festival International De La Gastronomie and honors one grand chef of the world each year. Mougins was magical. I would love to return here some day for an extended stay. Until then, I leave you with a couple of images from this 10th Century hilltop pedestrian only village.
Okay, before you think I have some kind of chair fetish, please note that two chairs left when these SWEET chairs came in last week. How could I say no to the crack my designer friend Lynn was selling when she told me I had to see the two new chairs she acquired to sell. My eyes glazed over and I started shaking. Had to have them….Had to. Silver leafed spider backs with python print on the cushion and silver studding. Welcome home.
Just had dinner with some food stylist friends from NY, which brought back fond memories of working with them on a few particularly slightly unpleasant shoots in the past. Laughable now, but dramatically tragic then. Fortunately this was one of my favs. I love me some Amy Sedaris and was honored to have made her cold cut cake. Can’t wait for her next book to come out…maybe I can style a raw meat tiramisu for it.
The feelings are all mine.
So enough about the digs and people…now about the food and of course spotlight on me for the week. I always keep a food journal when I travel to cook…something about a future book deal. A few weeks ago it was shrimp and cajun fries with Michelle Obama in Virgina…that’s an easy one to note in the journal. This one was so much food, I could barely remember to write down the most important. With 12 guys and two significant others, someone is always hungry, thirsty, sober or drunk. Everyday included a 3 hour trip to the markets loading and unloading my fiesty punta. 3 refers filled to the brim. I kept the menu primarily Italian since I could buy unbelievably great fresh pasta….god knows there was no time to make my own and what kind of an idiot would I be to try. I hope it makes you hungry…some of it just made me cry.

A huge private villa in Porto Cervo (the north east coast of Sardinia, Italy) is my home for the next 12 days while I cook for a yacht racing team doing the Rolex Swan Cup. Think Prada, Gucci, D&G, Alexander McQueen and Hermes when painting the picture of Porto Cervo in your head. The villa was fab in a “I desperately need a designer” way. The Marrakech Club is the aptly named sitting area by the pool of our villa. Who would have thought to put the silk and leather out and exposed to the elements…Italian Genius!? 7 bedrooms, one captain’s grotto, a loft only big enough to hold a cute Bermudan and a kitchen that any first time home owner would long for. All this aside, it was heavenly and I feel blessed to have been tapped to work 16 hours a day for 14 wonderful people. S/Y (that’s sail yacht for those of you outside the know like me) DARING’s crew consisted of the following…other’s came, went and ate:
John (owner and gentleman with a love for racing and a clock on his stomach), Benji (Olympic silver medalist, perpetual snacker and frustrated DJ), Jimmy (Adorable Chingali Hunting captain), Jim (aka Chip…one hollow leg and one steel goalie leg), Peter (funniest man to come out of Greenwich), Will (Sweet Spec eating Bermudan), Josh (cutest floater on the race course), Sammy (soccer playing, sweet toothed lover of all things west coast), Bennie (Perugina loving darling bow monkey), Pam (beautiful bad ass chick who sports a bling North Sails hoodie), Tom (Red shirted, Magnum PI loving funnyman), Dave (the dark Canadian knight)
Cathy Hinton is a past James Beard Foundation Cookbook Judge, new friend and food stylist I have recently had the pleasure of working with on three national commercials. When she heard I was heading to Italy on a job and had a couple of days in Rome, she insisted I make every effort to have the best pizza in the world. Apparently Mario Batali feels the same. Cathy, I formally bow down to the goddess of pizza knowledge and her fat red headed back up singer. I have NEVER had a better pizza. Even after a gastronomic home run for dinner tonight, I am still thinking about my pizza from lunch. Forno in Campo De Fiori, Rome…world’s best pizza
